We're a social club,
we encourage people
of all ages and abilities.
Like vintage wine the Whangarei
Veterans Tennis Club gets better
The club's 50 active members
include at least seven octo-
genarians and many in their 70s.
Many didn't start playing until
they retired but are now honing
their skills with racquet and ball.
The physical exercise, com-
panionship and friendly compe-
tition all adds to the health and
vitality of the players.
Kelly McPherson, 82, has been
playing at the club for 20 years as
a form of heart-strengthening
Despite recently suffering car-
diac arrests, he says the game is
not too strenuous.

Noel Taylor, 89, says he enjoys
the social aspect as well as the

Companionship is an important
part of the club and members try
to follow up with players if they
have been unwell, she says.
A new memorial cup honouring
club stalwart Melba Wright, who
died last year, will now be
awarded to those who go the extra
mile to serve the club.
Alice says any potential players
are welcome to come along.

Tennis Club and Friday mornings
at the Thomas Neale Family

Alice says the club is looking

The association has promised to
