Taranga (Hen) Island Rodent Eradication Operation
THE PUBLIC ARE ADVISED that from the 1st May -- 31st October 2011, the Department of
Conservation, Whangarei Area, intends to apply Pestoff 20R cereal baits containing brodifacoum
(0.02gm/kg) to the following area to eradicate rats for the purpose of restoring the island's biodiversity.
Description of the Area
The treatment area is described as Taranga (Hen) Island comprising of all land above mean high water.
Taranga Island is off the Whangarei coast and part of the Hen and Chicken Island group. No public
landing is permitted on this Nature Reserve and this will be strictly enforced during this operation.
Method of Control
Cereal baits containing the pesticide will be distributed by helicopters over the above area on two separate
dates approximately two weeks apart. Baiting will begin in the first period of favourable weather between
the 1st May and 31st October 2011. The baits are cylindrical pellets, dyed green, approx 2 cm long. Boaties
are requested to move a minimum of 500 metres from the island when the helicopter operation occurs.
This pesticide is poisonous to humans.
The Department and the Ngatiwai Trust Board advise that as a precaution the public are to avoid taking
kina and crayfish from within 50 metres of low tide of the island for a period of approximately 30 days
from the bait application. This period allows laboratory testing to confirm no residue is present from the rat
bait. Further media releases will be made when the operation commences.
For more information contact Keith Hawkins, (09) 470 3304 between the hours of 8.00am and 4.30pm.
A detailed map of the treatment area can be viewed at Whangarei Area Office, 8A Kaka Street, Whangarei,
between 8.00am and 4.30pm.
