Taste, taste, taste
is brewer's secret

Well brewed: The Whangarei Amateur Winemakers and
Brewers Club including national show winners Eva Lewis,
front left, and Heather Moore, front right, enjoy tasting and
sharing their products.
Turning fruit into an
takes more than just a
spoonful of sugar but
Brewers Club seem to
have the knack.
The small club has
been brewing plenty of
good winemakers and
brewers in its 30-odd
years of existence.
The club was formed
so members could help
each other make a better
product, president Gordon Dackers
Members meet every three months
for local competitions and tastings,
giving honest feedback about the taste
of the product.
And all the hints and shared know-
ledge seems to be working. Whangarei
recently did extremely well at the

It won half of the major awards at

Heather Moore won winemaker of
the show and liqueurmaker of the
show while Eva Lewis won best wine
of the show with a boysenberry wine.
The club also won 15 best in class
Gordon says the secret of a good
homemade wine or beer is to: Taste,
The winemaker or brewer has to
keep testing the product and other
people also have to taste it.
Gordon s wife Sherrill, club sec-
retary, says a poor tasting homemade
wine or beer can be off-putting for
friends and family invited to share it.
You find a lot of people who have
tasted homemade wine and beer and
they say how horrible it is. People get
used to tasting their own product and
they forget what s good.
Tasting is encouraged but Sherrill
says club members have a healthy
respect for the alcohol content of their
brews and don t just drink, drink,
We don t just down it glass after
glass, it s not a club of drunks. It s
really just the sharing of a hobby and
like-minded people doing the same
Gordon won four best in class
awards at the nationals and says wine
can be made out of anything - not just
His favourite is red fruit like boysen-
berry, black currant and passionfruit,
but it can also be made out of parsley,
celery and mint.
He admits there have been disasters
along the way to making a good wine.
Passionfruit is one of the worst
wines to make. One time I tipped 10
gallons of it out.
The club is open to new members.
