Contributions like this keep the SPCA going all year round, Whangarei SPCA spokeswoman Sue McDonald says. Legals hatch: Family and friends celebrating with the latest graduates in the New Zealand Law Society's legal executive diploma course. The 2012 Northland graduates are, from left back row: Amy Jones, Stephanie Cushen, Katrina Perry, Angela Burton, Nadia Withers, and, front row: Pat Weller -- NorthTec tutor, Nicole Dreadon, Tina Herman -- Northland president NZILE, Ryan Marsich and Sharon Heywood. The Northland branch of the New Zealand Institute of Legal Executives hosted the graduation ceremony on July 18 for eight (out of 14) Northland graduates. Stephanie Cushen was congratulated for achieving the second to top marks in New Zealand out of 161 graduates. Three of the graduates (including Stephanie) were from Whangarei law firm Henderson Reeves Connell Rishworth. Northland typically has a graduate or graduates among the highest achievers nationally each year. Bright sparks: NorthTec Electrical Engineering students have come out on top with 82 per cent of the class passing their electrical appliance serviceperson exam. The students scored well, with five in the class scoring more than 90 per cent including Timothy Peake and Benjamin Hessell scoring 98 per cent, and Dylan Tadman scoring 99 per cent, one of the highest scores in the country. The students are seen here with tutor Richie Stuart-Menteath, left, Dominic Laiman, Timothy Peake, Andrew Rocha, Dylan Tadman and tutor Dave Franklin. What made the achievement even more remarkable is that the two new electrical tutors only just began their teaching careers at NorthTec at the start of this year. Surf success: Matt McGregor from Kamo High School made the most of challenging conditions at Mangawhai Heads, coming second in the under-16 boys division of the final Northland Scholastics Surfing Series on July 20. Other successful Whangarei surfers were Paul Moretti from Mimiwhangata who won the under- 18 boys and boys longboard divisions and Manu Scott-Arietta from Whangarei Boys' High School who won the under-14 boys.
